THE “BREAKDONW”
September 13, 2007 · After 10 days online, my Fallingwater animation has become so popular that this website has suffered a “breakdown”. The technical team in front of Hostgator (my hosting provider) decided to close my site temporarily in order to solve that extreme situation. Fortunately it was only for some hours…
First of all I must say that I am grateful to the support guys at Hostgator. They explained in a clear and understable way the nature of this critical situation to someone —me— that is not an expertise on webmastering.
This was the origin: Digg and StumbleUpon (two social bookmarks sites) referred my animation and this originated a total of 26,575 visits on this day, with peaks of 500 persons trying to access my site at the same time.
As the guys at Hostgator explained to me:
This is not a bandwidth issue, its a server resource issue. Basically if your site is using up most of the resources on a server otheres on that server will suffer. Excessive traffic is not suitable for a shared environment […]
My first decission was to delete all the movie links on my site and maintain this situation over a short period (2-3 days). I have been working to create different mirrors of my main animations away from my server at Hostgator.
I have created a channel in Stage6 (the new system for upload & share videos in high quality, by DivX Inc): Etereaestudios Channel. You can find there the best quality version of some of my latests movies (Fallingwater, Nixus, Isfahan and Snakes).
And I have uploaded too these animations to YouTube, creating another channel there: YouTube Etereaestudios.
All of these content is visible directly from here, my site, apart from QuickTime versions hosted in my .Mac account.
By this way I try to avoid future blocks of my site, distributing the resources.
Now I will continue working hard on my next project :-)

EL “COLAPSO”
13 septiembre 2007 · Tras 10 días online, mi animación Fallingwater se hizo tan popular que esta web sufrió un “colapso”. El equipo técnico al frente de Hostgator (donde hospedo mi web) decidió cerrar mi sitio temporalmente para intentar solucionar esta situación extrema. Afortunadamente sólo estuvo así unas horas…
Ante todo debo decir que estoy muy agradecido a la gente del servicio técnico de Hostgator. Explicaron de una manera clara y comprensible la naturaleza de esta situación crítica a alguien que, como yo, no es precisamente un experto en webmastering.
Este fue el origen de todo: Digg and StumbleUpon (dos sitios de favoritos compartidos) reseñaron mi animación y esto originó un total de 26.575 visitas en ese día, con picos de 500 personas intentando acceder al mismo tiempo.
Tal como los chicos de Hosgator me explicaron:
No es tanto un problema de ancho de banda, como de recursos del servidor. Si tu sitio usa la mayoría de los recursos de un sevidor, los vecinos sufrirán. Un tráfico excesivo no es adecuado para un entorno compartido […]
Mi primera decisión fue eliminar todos los links a películas en mi web y mantenerla así durante unos dos o tres días. He estado trabajado para alojar varias copias de mis principales animaciones fuera de mi servidor en Hostgator.
He creado un canal en Stage6 (el nuevo sistema para subir y compartir vídeos en alta calidad, de DivX Inc): Etereaestudios Channel. Allí podéis encontrar las versiones con mayor calidad de mis últimas animaciones (Fallingwater, Nixus, Isfahan y Snakes).
Y también he subido estas animaciones a YouTube, creando otro canal alojado allí: YouTube Etereaestudios.
Todo este contenido es visible directamente desde mi web, aparte de unas versiones QuickTime alojadas en mi cuenta .Mac
De esta manera intento evitar futuros bloqueos de mi página web, distribuyendo los recursos.
Ahora ya puedo continuar trabajando en mi siguiente proyecto :-)
